Tragedy in Washington Presbytery
Part-time East Washington Borough Police Officer John David Dryer,was shot and killed when he approached a car he had pulled over near the Beau Street Exit on I-70 outside of Washington, PA. A member of Grove United Presbyterian Church, he was the nephew of Elaine Smith, member of Faith UP Church and of Nellie Baker, North Buffalo UP Church. He was employed as an equine veterinarian for Heinz Hitch and owned and operated Chestnut Veterinary Clinic in Washington. His partner, Officer Bob Caldwell, who was shot in the hand, is a member of the Faith UP Church, Washington.
The assailant, Eli Franklin Myers, sped off and barricaded himself inside his house. As a former police officer, authorities were concerned about how many – and what kind of – weapons Mr. Myers had accumulated. Following a lengthy standoff, police fired multiple chemical weapons into the house. He was killed when he exited armed. Prior to stepping outside, Myers had fired at police,
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, Allison Avenue, Washington. Viewings are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. A service is set for 2 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church on West Chestnut Street- the only church big enough to hold the service.
