Severe Flooding in Synod thanks to Hurricane Lee!

Wilkes-Barre's Market Street BridgeMuch damage has occurred throughout the Synod thanks to the excessive rain from Hurricane Lee. So the question tonight is,"Will the levees hold in Wilkes-Barre?"

Will the sandbags and stones and dirt hold back tons of water from the empty town?

We pray for all those who lives have been effected by this devastating flood......

Rejoicing turned to renewed fear this afternoon when word leaked out the that figures provided by the National Weather Service were incorrect, figures which had assured residents that the mighty Susquehanna crested below the destructive levels of 1972.

Instead, when those responsible recognized equipment malfunction, the reality was (and still is!) that the river crested almost a full two feet above Agnes, and even as the waters begin to recede, they are perilously high, crushing into bridges and levees.

Further downstream in Harrisburg, more and more residents find themselves underwater and uncertain about the next 48 hours. Roads are impassable, supplies limited, and in some areas power is out.
