Networks Begin Forming

by Bruce Stevens

The Synod of the Trinity took a large step towards the realization of its new mission design on Oct. 22 when the Peacemaking Network, the Resource Center Directors Network and the Carlisle-Donegal-Lehigh Church Transformation Network were recognized as the first three Mission Networks.  At that meeting it was noted that the Disabilities Network was "up and running," a Western NCD Network is actively forming, with an Eastern NCD Network under discussion.  Other networks being formed include a Christian Educators Network and a Disaster Response Network.   In the week that followed the Synod meeting, representatives from Lackawanna, Kiskiminetas and Carlisle presbyteries met with Synod staff to begin work on up to six networks forming to address their mutual needs and mission interests.

Mission Networks are the heart of the mission plan adopted by the Commissioners of the Synod in April 2003. They are intended to be the means through which an increasing number of people throughout the Synod can share information and resources, assist one another and act together on issues and matters about which they passionately sense God's call.

Anyone can be a part of a Mission Network.  Anyone can start forming a Mission Network.  All you need is a "sense of call."  A Mission Network does not have to be recognized by the Synod, but we think the Synod can help you identify other people with the same sense of call and help identify resources throughout the church.  Additionally, the Synod can help spread the word about what you are doing.   You may wish to refer to Synod Networking Guidelines on the website for detailed information on forming a Synod Mission Network.

We don't expect many networks to be "Synod-Wide" - most will be regional, involving folks from 2 or 3 presbyteries.  Networks will receive most of their "operational funding" from endorsing presbytery and churches, with assistance available from Synod for major events and projects.

We can help you get together, clarify your mission, and develop your plan.  We can hook you up with others who can help and want to be part of your effort.  We can spread the news across the Synod and beyond that you are responding to God's call to mission.

If you have an interest in either forming or joining a Mission Network, please contact Bruce Stevens at Bstevens@syntrinity.org.
