2005 Mission Travel Grant Recipient

Friendship Community Presbyterian Church

The Haiti Connection

12/27/04 - 1/5/05

“We see from where we stand.”

Dear Mission Travel Grants Committee:

This Haitian proverb took on great meaning as 17 members of Friendship Community Presbyterian Church lived and served among the Haitian people in the rural village of Basin Cayma.  Participants included families, singles, older adults, black and white, a doctor, a contractor, 7 youths and others.  From the Haitian's vantage point, we saw their beautiful country, their hope that rises out of poverty and their joy in God who answers their prayers.

On New Year’s Eve, our team was sent out into the homes of the church families to receive their hospitality.  We traveled into the dark night with our Haitian hosts with virtually no ability to communicate.  With joy, Pastor Ceylon, the minister of the local church, reminded us that this moment was a glimpse of the kingdom of Heaven where rich and poor, black and white, Haitian and American will be together with no barriers, language or otherwise.

On a practical level, our support helped to provide materials and labor to pour the concrete roof on the school building, build the trusses for the tin roof over the bread oven and provide a privacy wall for the outhouses.  We completed these projects side by side with the villagers from Basin Cayma.

On behalf of Friendship Community Presbyterian Church, I would like to extend our deep thanks to the Synod of the Trinity for supporting our congregation’s mission trip to Haiti.
