Andrew McCutcheon contributed 10 times. So did Neil Walker. Gabby Sanchez helped out once. And even Travis Ishikawa, who doesn’t play with the Pittsburgh Pirates anymore, had a swing worth $100 in 2014.

The Pittsburgh Pirates recently wrapped up another successful season that included a second straight trip to the postseason. Along the way, the Pirates hit 62 home runs at their home stadium — PNC Park. As part of the Home Runs for Hunger campaign, those long balls resulted in over $10,000 in donated money from local churches and businesses that will help feed hungry children. For every home run hit by a Pirate in Pittsburgh in 2014, Presbyterian (USA) churches, as well as other area organizations and businesses, donated $100 or more to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Summer is a prime time to donate food. With children being out of school for summer vacation, many are less likely to receive a balanced meal at home. Nearly 30 percent of the people who go to a food bank in the Greater Pittsburgh area come during those summer months.

This season marked the fourth straight year for the Home Runs for Hunger program. Anyone wishing to participate in 2015 can find out more information here. Gifts will help alleviate hunger and make people more aware this need exists in the communities.
