Captured (The Captive Series Book 1) - Kindle edition by Stevens, Erica, G2 Freelance Editing, Leslie Mitchell. |, August 15, 2017 | Rating: 2.5/4

December 18, 2017 • Story selection and rights acquired; idea being crafted into usable script; financing and casting attachments sought; aiming for 'greenlight'. Aggressively stupid when it's not downright illogical, it is hard to imagine a film less deserving for a competition slot at this year's Cannes than The Captive, a subpar Law & Order episode at best. This part of the book provides us with a truly agonising insight into the consequences of jealousy, when it is taken to pathological extremes. Here I think it’s Laurent trying to pass his own sexual abuse to Damen, indirectly. The primal beast vanishes suddenly in the middle of battle, allowing Stan to reunite with Aliza at last.

When Laurent has Damen attend him in the baths I find it very interesting, because there’s this giant unspoken question hovering over them. It’s confusing and disorienting, but all of that is stifled behind the visage he gives the court. I go from excessively enjoying the writing to finding the characters extremely annoying. Upon hearing her encouragement, his resolve to save Aliza strengthens as the crew continues onward. The Modern Library’s fifth volume of In Search of Lost Time contains both The Captive (1923) and The Fugitive (1925).In The Captive, Proust’s narrator describes living in his mother’s Paris apartment with his lover, Albertine, and subsequently falling out of love with her.In The Fugitive, the narrator loses Albertine forever.Rich with irony, The Captive and The Fugitive | Rating: 1/5

Reviews of Michaelides’s debut, which he is adapting as a screenplay for Brad Pitt’s production company, were mostly positive — a la, a deft thriller that will surely cost you sleep as you try, and fail, to put it down — but I could not help but notice ones like this: “Amateurish, with a twist savvy readers will see coming from a mile away.” Wait. “Thank who?” Damen pushed the words out, somehow, past the pain, but he knew. However, a mysterious woman suddenly appears, pointing the barrel of her giant gun directly at them. The crew recognizes the monsters as the same ones that attacked their airship earlier, and suspect that there may be someone else behind the scenes controlling them.

Stan loses heart after realizing he is the only one afraid of the primal beast. His control is a protective measure to mitigate his fear and there are incredible lengths he will go to in order to preserve his control. [Full review in Spanish].

The percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given this movie a positive review. It’s so much easier to hate someone when you don’t know them and Damen expressing his humanity throws Laurent for a loop each time. The crew finally corners Aviza. When Damen offers up his complete obedience if Laurent will help the Akeilon slaves, it reveals a self-sacrificing, non-monster version of Damen. You’ve read ‘Woman in the Window,’ and you’re ready to see the movie. The really twisted thing about the Regent bringing in Damen to be a pleasure slave for Laurent is because he wanted to wait for the moment when Laurent actually allowed Damen into his bed and then the Regent would reveal Damen’s identity.

I particularly enjoy the scenes where Damen says or does something that utterly confuse Laurent. In Michaelides’s London, the sky is forever threatening snow, a stark and chilling white.

That I read all 323 pages of Alex Michaelides’s best-selling psychological thriller and did not deduce the twist until he wanted me to (page 304)? This story is part of a series for people who have already read the book and want to think more deeply about the ending.
