I came across this one when I was in library school years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.It has a similar feel to some of the Agatha Christie country house mysteries.

You have a way of cutting through the chaff and giving me just the pertinent information on which to base my decisions about these books. Article I loved The Moonstone so I think I'm going to have to try this one too! So one should release expectations before cracking this book. We are talking about the same A.A. Milne that brought us Winnie the Pooh? Although I don't love mysteries, I love Milne's winnie-the-pooh stories! The point of view shifts from one person's interior thoughts to the next from one paragrap. Find books by time period, setting & theme, Read-alike suggestions by book and author. I scanned to the end and was thoroughly disappointed that I'd spent good money to buy this awful bit of literature. I could have done without phrases like "The swill and chatter of water" on page 144 or "Bruised purple sky, wind like a train, the landscape. So this is Winnie-the-Pooh A.A. Milne? Seriously though...I picked up this book because it was in my recommendations. There is a lot to be said about trusting a good chef to know what to serve. As for the Victorians, although I'm a Texas writer, I have an insatiable appetite for them. I was going to ask if this was the same person who wrote the Pooh stories but I see from the comments he must be. I now have a new book that I can say is the worst book I have ever read. ...Yet the plot feels organic rather than contrived, the characters convincing throughout, the tone compassionate and the writing wise. I was genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to read the new novel by Mark Haddon. I just picked this up today in the library. Like millions I loved The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. I have The Moonstone on the shelf, unread (lucky me! I only recently became aware of the fact that Milne wrote more than just children's books. In addition to The Talking Horse, The Sad Girl, and The Village Under the Sea, a collection of poetry, Haddon has also written and illustrated numerous award-winning children's books and television screenplays. Which I never have, shamefully enough. The writing is very self-conscious and it is difficult to get a sense of the story which is obfuscated by the writing itself.

I love the sound of this and the fact that you mentioned it was hilarious. Oh the shame of not knowing. There is no wondrous Asperger savant kid in this one nor hapless and resilient man with a humorous Walter Mitty-like interior monologue.
